Sri Ganesh Chalisa in English Lyrics With Meaning

॥ Doha ॥

Hail, Hail, O Ganesha, Hail to you; The whole world salutes you, because you are the adorable son of Gauri and the charming son of Shiva. You are the one who destroys all the troubles (like happiness-sorrow, birth-death, attraction-repulsion etc.) and provides freedom from them.

॥ Chaupai ॥

Glory to you, oh son of Shambhu and joy of Gauri, you are the destroyer of all obstacles and the liberator of all from the cycle of birth and death. Glory to you, O leader of Shiva’s followers, giver of happiness to all his devotees, teacher of all and conductor of wisdom!

O Ganesha (Vakratunda), your elephant has a graceful tusk on its face and your sacred trunk is graceful; The crescent-shaped trident on your forehead is as beautiful as the moon, and the gods, humans and ascetics who see your beauty cannot help but be fascinated by it.

You have a garland of gems on your chest, the beauty of a full-grown lotus in your eyes and a crown of gems on your head. You provide freedom to your devotees from worries and hold a sacred ax and a beautiful trident in your hands. Sweet laddus in dishes and fragrant flowers in flowers are your favourite.

Blessed are you, O brother of Kartikeya and beloved son of Shiva and Gauri; Dressed in beautiful yellow silk and wearing wooden sandals studded with gems on your feet, you are the source of all blessings in the world.

Both prosperity and accomplishment wave royally over you (as if they were chauri-burdars) and your vehicle, the Rat, graces your doorstep. Since the story of Your life is so strange and mysterious, who can dare to describe Your glory, which is beyond telling to all?

To foil the plans of a demon, who often came there in the guise of Shiva to woo Gauri, Shiva’s beloved wife Gauri created a divine form from the dirt of his body.

He asked his son to keep watch and posted him at the door of the palace like a gatekeeper. When Shiva himself came there, he was not allowed to enter the house because he was unknown.

Shiva asked: Tell me who is your father? You replied in a voice as sweet as honey, Listen sir, I am Gauri’s son; Don’t you dare move even a step beyond this point.

“Oh God!” Let me ask your mother’s permission before allowing you in; “There will be no benefit in just fighting with naked jerks like me.” Not listening to your animal, Shivat tempted you to run towards the house, which upset you so much that, in anger, you threw down the weapon.

In anger, Shiva picked up his trident and launched it at you out of fascination. Your head, as soft as a Shirisa flower, was cut off and it immediately flew into the sky and disappeared there.

When Shiva happily went inside where Gauri, the daughter of the mountain king, was sitting, he asked smilingly, “Tell me Sati, how did you give birth to your son?”

After listening to the whole story the secret was revealed. Gauri, though the daughter of the great mountain king (celebrated for stability) was so impressed and distraught that she fell on the ground and said, “You have greatly insulted me, my Lord; now go and go wherever you want, my son. If you find the severed head, bring it from there!”

Shiva, adept in all skills, set out with Vishnu, but failing to find the head, he brought an elephant and placed it on the trunk and breathed life into it.

Lord Shiva named you Shri Ganesha and blessed you with knowledge, wisdom and immortality. O Lord, you are the first among the worshipable; You give joy to the faithful, destroy all obstacles and cause the intellect to operate.

Whoever remembers you before going on any work, all his work in this world gets accomplished. The mere remembrance of Your name brings all happiness, without Your all-forgiving grace there is no security and well-being anywhere in the world.

Cursed by you, the face of the Moon when visible on the fourth day in the Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada (Bhado) was obscured by the dark reflection of the Earth, which no one could dare to see. When Shiva wanted to test you (your strength and intelligence) he asked you to revolve around the earth.

When Sadmukh (your brother Kartikeya) was flying on his peacock, you adopted an easier method) Without moving, you wrote the name of Rama on the ground and, abandoning all apprehensions, circled around it.

(With utmost devotion) You held the feet of your parents and circumambulated them seven times. Thus you were rewarded for circling the earth, a feat that caused the gods to shower you with flowers.

While living in the ashram of sage Durvasa, Sundardas, a devotee of Rama, composed this hymn to Ganesha in forty verses, as did the foremost poets of the Shiva Purana.

Those intelligent people who sing the glory of Lord Ganesha every day attain supreme happiness. Lord Shiva’s attendant who blesses his devotees with wealth, children and happiness, also provides them with every auspicious thing.

॥ Doha ॥

He who repeats this hymn faithfully receives all the hospitality and kind gifts, the novelty of which is further enhanced, and also a great honour. This hymn of forty verses was completed on the third day of Krishna Paksha of Bhadra month in Vikram year 2010 (A.D. 1953). Thus Sunderdas demonstrated his unwavering devotion towards Lord Ganesha.
